Rule 4: Know your market and stick to it

In this age of internet technology you can just bet on almost anything you want. Among Betfair's current markets are Bandy (have to be honest and say I have no idea what this is), Gaelic games, Handball, Pelota (again, no idea), Volleyball and Water Polo. On their Soccer menu, there are games covered from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Serbia, Romania, Poland and the Ukraine. If there's a sporting contest televised anywhere in the world now, money is you can place a wager on it.

Even the traditional high street bookie (probably to try and compete with the internet and also to get as much money as humanly possible) there is now multiple virtual races, lottery draws and even poker events to cram in between the multitude of horse races from South Africa, the UK and the US.

Therefore it is possible that you spread your time covering too many of these sports (although I'm not sure whether Bandy is a sport or what it actually involves) and leak your cash away not really knowing what you backing.

For me its simple; football is my love and football will what I bet on. More specifically I will concentrate on the England and Scotland leagues (including the non-league scene, where I watch a lot of games) and the big European competitions (although these need a little more research).
